The Mt Gravatt Stroke and Friendship Club was started in the late 90s due to the lack of support for stroke survivors and carers once they left the hospital system.
The program varies with interesting speakers who are not related to stroke but who bring a sense of connection with the community away from stroke. The group also enjoys lunches and picnics through the year and these are always a great place for people to feel they are not alone.
After the speaker or activity on the meeting day some of the group will head to a local café at Garden City for a bite of lunch and to socialise. From this friendships have developed over the years.
Recently a group has been formed for carers and they have a short time to themselves in another area of the meeting room to discuss and share what they have learnt after becoming full-time carers. So far this group is proving very worthwhile.
The Mt Gravatt Stroke and Friendship Club welcomes stroke survivors and carers to enjoy a cuppa, listen to some interesting speakers, enjoy the friendship and support that is very evident within the group and is based on caring and sharing for those who may feel isolated after a stroke.
Second Friday of each month, from 10.30 am until 12 noon.
The group meets at the Garden City Library Community Room
