Hi there.

I am a young stroke survivor and six months post stroke. I am really struggling with fatigue, depression and headaches. My psychologist said I should go back to doctor and see a neurologist physio about pacing and boom/bust tendencies. My doctor said she had never heard of a neuro physio and to just go to the one the psychologist knew of. The neuro physio said I need to see an OT. The OT gave me a quote for $2700 and when I called BUPA to see if they would cover any they said $20 a session! Now they are all saying I am probably eligible for NDIS. I am just exhausted trying to chase down help. I also just finished a six week challenge with a PT and did we thing to the letter - exercise, food, no alcohol (needed for stroke anyway), even cut out caffeine to see if that would help with fatigue and sleep. I lost no weight and no measurements and she is stumped too and said to go back to doctor. Who can actually help me??

Hello

It sounds like you have been having a tough time.

It’s certainly worth seeing your GP to look at reviewing your depression and headaches.

Fatigue can also be a contributing factor towards exacerbating your headaches and mood.

It’s also important to make sure you are getting adequate sleep.

The NDIS is something worth considering, especially if you have ongoing significant and permanent impairments as a result of your stroke. You can find more information about NDIS and stroke here

An Occupational Therapist is someone that could definitely assist you.

They can help you to break down your tasks at an individual level and focus on planning, pacing and prioritising techniques.

This may include learning alternative techniques or strategies, in addition to considering the use of adaptations and equipment.

The overall effect of learning fatigue management strategies is to minimise your overall level of fatigue, whilst enabling you to move forward toward your goals.

You could access an Occupational Therapist through a referral from your GP via a chronic disease management care plan.
