Questions to ask

If you or a loved one has had a stroke, you will have concerns about what lies ahead. It can be a challenging to get all of the information you need.  You can use these questions in your conversations with health professionals.

  1. Have all of the necessary stroke investigations been completed?
  2. What is the severity of the stroke and the predicted prognosis or longer term outcome?
  3. What are the physical, sensory, cognitive, and communication changes I may experience?
  4. What type of rehabilitation is needed?
  5. How much rehabilitation will I get and how long will it last?
  6. Will I be able to return home after the stroke?
  7. Where can I seek financial advice after my stroke?
  8. What resources are available for people with language changes and their caregivers?
  9. What other services are available?
  10. When can I return to work and driving?
  11. How do I reduce my risk of having another stroke?

Here are some questions to ask:

  1. What kind of stroke did I have?
  2. How bad is the stroke?
  3. What tests do I need? Will I have them in hospital or after I leave?
  4. What changes will happen to me?
  5. How will I feel after the stroke?
  6. What are the chances I will get better?
  7. What do I need to do to get better?
  8. When can I go home?
  9. Who can help me at home?
  10. Who can help me move again?
  11. Who can help me with my talking?
  12. Where can I get help with money?
  13. What other services are available?
  14. When can I drive again?
  15. When can I go back to work?
  16. How can I avoid having another stroke?
  17. How will I know if I am having another stroke?
