Bob is turning 50 this year and is ran his first 50 kilometre ultramarathon to mark the occasion.
He had two strokes in 2016 which eventually revealed that he needed a PFO closure.
After the PFO he was put on blood thinners, which resulted in internal hemorrhaging. The bleed revealed that he had stage three bowel cancer. He had a bowel resection and six months of chemotherapy.
He decided to take up running to turn his life around. Less than a year after finishing chemo he ran in Run Melbourne (2019) and raised over two thousand dollars for Stroke Foundation programs and research.
A year later he ran his first marathon, running from the cancer hospital in Ballarat to his home in Ballan, raising money for the cancer unit.
Since then, he has run a marathon every year, including the Great Ocean Road, O'Keefe Challenge and The McLaren Vale Marathon. This year will be his first (and probably last) ultramarathon, he did the Ultra Perth, on Sat 8th June.
He will be raised funds for both Stroke Foundation and Bowel Cancer Australia.
Let's get together to send Bob a huge 'hazzah' for his efforts and take a moment to appreciate how he put his body on the line for us all.
