Whether you are a stroke survivor, carer, friend or family member, Stroke Changes Your Life.
It is very normal for everyone involved to experience strong emotions. You may feel anger, anxiety, sadness, and fear. But you may also feel hopeful for recovery, gratefulness, and love for your family and friends. All of these emotions are real and valid and can also be overwhelming. You are not alone.
It’s okay to say you need help or someone to talk to. At Stroke Foundation, we encourage you to reach out and find help, community, and connection. Never underestimate the power of a trusted friend or confidant. Chat to your GP about a Mental Health Care Plan for counselling, find a support group or access EnableMe (a free online resource and networking platform facilitated by Stroke Foundation). Our page on Emotions has some great resources about the emotional turbulence of life after stroke including podcasts on depression and anxiety and emotional and personality changes. Research suggests mindfulness (the practice of grounding yourself in the present) and meditation relieves stress, lowers blood pressure, reduces pain, improves memory and concentration and relationships. This is all important in stroke recovery and living well after your stroke.
At StrokeLine, we are available Monday to Friday 9-5 AEST if you need someone to talk to. Call 1800 787 653.
