Hi, I'm Ian's wife and carer and have been reading the blogs re travelling post stroke. Ian has left sided hemiplagia and cannot walk or use his left hand. We have travelled from Perth to Melbourne and also holidayed in Coolum Queensland this year. I agree there is a lot of extra planning necessary but it's worth it. I have found accessibility means many things, for instance showers and toilets can be left or right handed (check this if it applies when booking), the beds can be very low and difficult to get up from (take a collapsible bed rail that can fit in your case, it helps when getting out of bed). If necessary hire a commode or toilet seat, bed rail etc which can be delivered to your apartment. Public toilets provide disabled access but sometimes only in male or female facilities which means as a carer you have to choose which one to attempt (I have notified several councils of this problem). We have flown Qantas and Virgin and found staff very helpful. Our biggest problem would be the toilets on planes so keep flight times to a minimum, of course this depends on how incapacitated you are. We have found it is possible to travel so far but it needs a lot of extra planning. Good luck. Jenn
