Aged 59, I had a stroke in 2000 affecting the loss of the use of my left arm and leg, and with minimal therapy, made a full recovery. June 2021 I had an Ischaemic Stroke with total loss of my speech, basic function loss, vision impairment with loss of reading, writing, typing, and tottery balance and gait. I worked round the clock during lockdown in rehab, and after 2 months, continuing at home with a speech therapist. I have recovered well but, as many stroke survivors say, I look better on the outside than I feel on the inside! I do grieve for my former self and spontaneous conversation. I do suffer from a considerable degree of fatigue, managed though practising mindfulness and naps, but I count my blessings in terms of others who are so much worse than I. I didn't have any issues with facial muscles weakness or mouth droop.
A problem has arisen which I would like to share with other stroke survivors, to gain insight to if others have experienced similar problems with their teeth post stroke? 9 months after my stroke, in March, I went to the Dentist for a clean, he took x-rays, and said 2 teeth were loose on left side and had to come out, and said it was nothing to do with having had a stroke. Subsequently 2 teeth taken out and 5 lots of antibiotics, and 4 months later I still have much pain, swelling, and ulcers.
So I went to a Periodontist. I had a dormant Wisdom tooth out and surgery to scrape, repair and stitch up my gums, but 6 months later, the left side still swollen, painful, inside cheeks inflamed and sensitive, and difficult to open mouth. Still saying nothing to do with the stroke. I am now being referred to an Oral Surgeon. I don't want any more teeth out, or surgery!
So if anyone else has experienced a similar story I would very much like to have their comments.
