Hello all

I don't wish to be controversial, in fact I whole heartedly support the vaccine program and believe it vital we all are vaccinated. I wonder if enable me has any advice with regard to the vaccines being used. I heard different stories about blood clots in people after being vaccinated and while I know the incidence of such case has been show to be within statistical norms I wonder if enable me has any further advice with regard to having an aneurism survivor vaccinated and if there are any precautions that I should be aware of or if they recommend one particular vaccine over another?

Hi Joe,

Not controversial at all, it's a logical question to be asking.

You may have seen in the news the reports in Europe of a rare type of clotting (Cerebral Venous Sinus Thrombosis; CVST; and a low platelet count) following AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine.

Stroke survivors are at a greater risk if they have previously contracted COVID-19. Currently there is no evidence that the venous clots reported are of concern for most stroke patients. With the exception of stroke survivors who have a history of CVST. For people with a history of CVST we advise you speak to your doctor and wait a few weeks for further investigation and information from these cases.

The CVST related cases currently under investigation are exceedingly rare and equate to 7 cases out of 1.6 million vaccinations in Germany. From the recent Astra Zeneca trial in the US, zero cases were reported out of 22,000 trials. So far, no CVST related cases associated with the Astra Zeneca vaccination have been recorded in Australia.

We recommend speaking with your GP and/or neurologist to discuss any concerns prior to receiving the vaccine. They will have your full medical history and be best to advise.

My husband has had two strokes (two clots). We are currently seeing a haematologist and asked him the same question. He said that because my husband is on warfarin the clotting side effect is not an issue (because if you have a clotting reaction to the vaccine, the treatment is warfarin anyway). He also said that being 61, having dysphagia and a heart condition - it is a good idea for my husband to get the vaccine because the risk of covid is a greater risk. My husband is keen to get the vaccine when he can, even if it is the astra zenica one.

I'm just worried about the chance of getting a clot and it affecting my wife but your response has helped me a lot. I'm keen to get us vacinated as soon as possible.Many thanks
