It was fantastic to welcome Marcus Otlowski to the Melbourne and Hobart Stroke Foundation offices last week, to talk about his recovery and how he manages his aphasia.
Marcus lives in Japan with his two sons and wife and teaches English at a national university. Both his English and Japanese language are affected by aphasia which he suffered after a stroke in 2014.
After his stroke, Marcus knew there were no English-speaking occupational or speech therapists in his city. Instead, a group of English teachers were his speech therapists. After a lot of work, Marcus got back into the classroom and began teaching again.
Marcus has always used storytelling in his classes even before his stroke, he found that, and photography were ways to reclaim his life.
He believes it is vital that stroke and aphasia stories are shared, so we can all learn and help support others.
