In August 2016 I was discharged from the Bankstown Stroke Unit after my rehab following my Left Lacunar Stroke in April 2016.
My release [ oops Freudian slip] I meant discharge was vastly different from my ‘premiere in the Rehab Gym.’
With-0/5 strength on my entire right side; hemiparesis on my right side of my face; my swallow badly effected [I had a feeding tube for 3 weeks]; and my late-night radio voice was a husky whisper- in short Thrill Seekers and Fellow Time Travellers I was not a pretty picture!
I was wheeled into the gym in my wheelchair.
With the skill, empathy, and commitment from an amazing group of rehab clinicians [physios and OT’s\} 16 weeks later I walked out into my Post stroke life.
I composed the attached poster with a picture of me saying farewell to these people that day but more importantly it outlines my rehab philosophy which assisted me to achieve the results that I did.
Please read it, think about the words-
My message to Stroke Survivors – Trust me these words rang true
My Message to Stroke Clinicians- When you are with a Survivor mention these words and how they can help in their rehab,
As my poster states- TRUST ME IT WORKED FOR ME-
