Rehabilitation hospital stay as inpatient

Hi, yes I was lucky enough to spend a couple of months as inpatient rehab in public hospital following a hemorrhagic stroke. 

Take the chance if available, I was able to go from fully left sided paralysis to learning to walk from daily physio and ot. 

Try to secure therapy outside of hospital asap as usually long waiting lists, can be a year. 

Hi J9 thank you for answering. I write not about me but my brother who had bad stroke in July and is still in hospital though they want him out as soon as possible into disability accommodation. He can not speak,  read or write and is paralyzed on his right side. Hospital is refusing give him referral for rehabilitation hospital as having no benefit for him. That is why I want to hear from people who been there and what was their condition based on which they were accepted into rehab hospital. I am stunned from this refusal.

Hi Georg, I had an ischemic stroke  last July and was admitted to a public hospital into their rehabilitation unit. I was discharged after 2 months and started a community based rehabilitation programme. I was to have a speech therapist, physiotherapist and an occupational therapist for approximately 2 months as an outpatient. It took about 6 weeks from my discharge to when they came to assess me and each of them discharged me separately when they thought I did not need to see them anymore.  I was given instructions on how to keep practicing to get better.  I did do some physio rehab privately / or when I felt a little stuck and that helped me.  I did feel at the time (on discharge) I was left without clear instruction on what to do - how  to continue. In hindsight, for me, outside of the rehab unit I did try harder - I tried harder to  find help and pushed myself a little harder.  I probably felt at the time that I really had to keep practicing my speech, writing and walking in order to improve.  I think back now to how I was and appreciate how far I’ve come.  I was lucky that friends helped me in finding the help I needed and they were also great, visiting me and treating me like before ( with some minor adjustments however) I am grateful I was relentless in trying to get help, calling and persevering and I think I am better for that.  It is an expensive period, especially post COVID as allied health services are hard to come by and as you know the hospitals are stretched and need the beds!! I hope your brother does well and you can get him the help he needs at this time. Good luck !
