My husband, Mal, had a hemorrhagic stroke in October 2019 which caused right side hemiplegia as well as Broca's aphasia therefore getting his driver's licence again was something that we never thought could happen but we set it as a goal anyway.
As we live in Regional Queensland we don't have an Occupational Therapist who specialises in driving in the area so we had to travel to a neighbouring city (2 hours away from home) for him to get assessed. The OT comes to this town once every 3 months.
The assessment was very thorough with both theoretical which was adapted for his aphasia as well as practical. His assessment went quite well and we had to book driving lessons with an instructor to become accustomed to the lollipop on the steering wheel as well as the left accelerator pedal. The instructor had to come from Brisbane (again, we don't have those facilities available in the area). His lessons were done just prior to the second assessment which was a long 3 month wait.
I was so pleased yesterday when he passed his second assessment. This will give him so much independence.
Next step is getting the modifications done on the car
