Sit or lie down, gently close your eyes, and give them your full attention. Block out light and sound. Now, listen inwardly. This is an opportunity to learn how to relax your eyes with gentle self-care:
- Do your eyes feel the same? Identical?
- Do your eyeballs move smoothly or are they jumpy?
- Is there any tightness, twitching, or dryness? Any discomfort? If so—where exactly?
Even if you’re not consciously aware of it, your eyes may be holding tension that reflects the stress of your day or your thoughts.
Here are a few signs your eyes might need rest or vision care:
- They feel heavy, sore or tired.
- You are unable to focus (near or far) clearly.
- You blink excessively or your eyes are weepy.
- Your eyes move erratically or are jumpy.
- Your head is tilted or your eyes squinted, to see better
- There are dark circles under your eyes.
Your brow is furrowed or veins are popping.
You can unwind your eyes and reset your nervous system with a few simple eye relaxation practices including:
- Metronome Blinking: Blink your eyes steadily—once per second for 20–30 seconds. This is great for your eye health because it hydrates, relaxes, and reboots the eye muscles.
- Let your eyes explore softly in all directions. No fixed gazes or staring. Let movement return.
- 20-20-20 Rule: Every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away (say 6 metres) for 20 seconds.
- Stay Hydrated: Your eyes love water. Be aware of their wellbeing and keep them moist from the inside out.
- Eye Squeeze & Release: Tightly shut your eyes. Hold a few seconds. Release. Feel the letting go. Repeat.
- Eye Palming: Cover closed eyes with your cupped palms (no pressure). Breathe. Let the darkness calm you and feel the body-wide effects of this self-care.
