Rebellions are built on hope. So is stroke rehabilitation. It takes many long hours over a sustained period to make even a partial recovery from stroke, thanks to the everyday-kind-of-magic that is neuroplasticity. A realistic sense of hope is important to keep going. It's one of the reasons why I volunteer on the stroke rehabilitation wards where I was a patient, talking with patients and showing them one example, me, of what recovery can look like if you keep hoping and working at it. Season 1 of Andor depicts a death from stroke, in part caused by overwork, which felt too real and a bit traumatic to watch. But it also features one of the best monologues of the show, by the character Luthen Rael. I found out recently that the star Stellan Skarsgård, who plays Luthen, survived a stroke, yet thanks to practice and an accessibility adjustment gave an amazing performance.
