Yes I know what you mean about navigating the real deal from the fluff. 

I too am exploring the publishing world and think I will be heading down the self publishing path.  Which too, is confusing, I just need to have my words out, in order, edited and then the next step.

And yes writing is so cathartic, keep writing.

I had always wanted to go into the publishing industry and hence did some further study in publishing. It was a number of years ago now, but I don't think too much has changed. I didn't end up finding a job in publishing, but may be able to offer some insight.

The best way to go is to self publish on Amazon if you want people to pay for it or on D2D if you want to distribute it free. 

Since I had my stroke, I have published 9 fiction books under a pen-name and have learned how to format and upload for publication both as an ebook and a print on demand book. 

Publishing on Amazon and D2D is completely free.
