This morning whilst on my 90-minute morning walk, I was stopped by a woman whom I have passed many times and we were on a nodding acquaintance.
What she said surprised me “Excuse me, but I have seen you walking many times over the last 2 years, and I must compliment you on the improvement of your walking- you have gone from a shuffle when I first saw you to confidently striding, head up, along the footpath. Well Done”.
That was all she said. It turns out she was a retired physio.
Go Figure!!
After that meeting, I could have walked to the CBD, some 25 kms away!
I mentally indulged myself on how far I had travelled on my rehab journey. With the efforts of some bloody brilliant physios.
5 years ago, this very day, I got up gingerly from my wheelchair in the Bankstown Stroke Unit and did my first 6-minute walk-63 metres!!
My calculations say that I now walk an average of 15 kms a day, 7 days a week and unfortunately it is no wonder my feet are a mess-corns, callouses and a podiatrist visit every 10 weeks- but it is worth it!
