Can anyone tell me if it is possible to take my husband for a trip on an aeroplane given the fragile condition of his brain after 5-6 large bleeds to different areas of his brain over the last 2 years.

He now has severe brain injuries which include his complete loss of speech and very little, if any, body movement at all. However, he still has understanding and I would love to take him away during the punishing Winter given that the quality of his life is paramount.

His Specialist no longer sees a need to make any further appointments with him and I am not sure if his GP has the expertise to answer this question.

Now, as his Soulmate, Wife and full time Carer, I think that it's all about him enjoying his life as much as possible.... That is my mission!

Is this just a pipe dream or would it be possible?

It would be a good idea to speak with the consultant who was responsible of the matter. My partner was advised to avoid flying for several months after the bleed, but she was later told she is fine to do everything normally. Interestingly we have recently discovered that the spontaneous bleed of about three years was caused by breakdown components of cholesterol blocking capilliaries. She is due to have more testing done in early 2018 to determine what should be done to prevent a future incident. Apparently this capilliary bursting issue has only recently been the subject of research studies.

Hi Jeanette,

It’s a good idea for your husband to have medical clearance before he flies. As Doug suggested, his previous treating neurologist may be the best person to speak to as he or she will have in-depth knowledge about your husband’s medical history. Your GP may be happy to liaise directly with the neurologist.

There is a great article on the challenges of flying after a stroke, written by Will Davies from Different Strokes in the UK. It includes chatting with your doctor who will have a comprehensive knowledge of your medical history, and informing your travel insurance of your stroke and any prescribed medications you’re taking.
