Since I sustained my Left Lacunar Stroke in April 2016, sage advice on my rehab and future life was given to me from numerous sources- doctors, nurses, rehab staff and importantly my family and close circle of friends- all generous in their proffering, caring and learned - all of which had a profound influence on my rehab and recovery.
On several occasions the most powerful and resonating advice came from fellow stroke survivors who, to use the current lexicon “had walked the walk” Hence the theme of my current epistle-
What advice would I as a Stroke Survivor give a fellow Stroke Survivor
My advice would be simple and embraces the following points –
- ACCEPT that your life and/or lifestyle may have changed because of the Stroke, then proceed to develop plans that will help you make the most of your days!
- DO NOT GIVE UP - there are many skilled clinicians who can aid you to help you recuperate. Do not hesitate to ask for help, the Stroke Foundation of Australia can provide you and your family a wide range of professional help and advice.

PLAN YOUR REHAB - set targets, make your plan quantifiable, realistic\{measurable\} so you can measure your progress. Talk to your doctor/physio they will be able to help you.
CELEBRATE YOUR ACHEIVEMENTS - give yourself a treat, when I achieve a walking goal, I visit the local Vietnamese bakery for a fantastic heavenly sausage roll!! Do it.
My blog may help you write your rehab objectives-
If you can, get a rescue dog, start walking or start a vegetable garden-! DOES WONDERS FOR THE SOUL!
Happy Trails.
