In our article “Recovery from Stroke” we listed four features that should form part of the recovery process. They are Opportunities, Goals, Work, Time. You can see the logic of the association.
Goals are the easiest thoughts to list because that’s all they are. You can make and cancel dozens in ten minutes. But surely they are something to aim at. Quite so but they have no trigger. Work provides the trigger and the energy, and without it nothing happens.
This little bit of knowledge may not be known to every goals “expert” who thinks that if we set goals high enough they will somehow pull the stroke person to some magic recovery. What a load of rubbish! Let we stroke-affected people ignore stroke literature that ignores work.
How to get the best therapist for work? From the university-trained neurological physios. Good work is complicated. There should be a special word which makes the necessary connection between goals and work. GOW?
