Recently a website in the west that is coaching about meditation had a brief statement on consciousness re-engineering. Curious, I contacted then to find out what consciousness is and about re-engineering. Well they never got back to me. Often there are misconceptions about consciousness. Consciousness is not just there, and it is of six types. Eye-consciousness, ear-consciousness..... etc. Thus there are six types of consciousness. It is like fire. You might have a gas fire, wood fire, oil fire etc. Consciousness arises when for example eye meets an object and there arises eye-consciousness. The object forms a form perception in the retina of the eye and it is that image with the sensitivity of eye that gives consciousness. same goes for all six agencies. When you meditate, you are shutting down five agencies of eye, ear, nose, tongue and body and only mind is open and that too on one thing like your breath. The path to purification and ending all your mental stress is only with mindfulness development so that you learn not to react. Even if a person shouts at you, you might not take it in but is with equanimity. Our problems are that we take all consciousness that we develop in the 6 agencies as mine and react to those and that leads to mental stress. So the way out is meditation.
