Hi Everyone
I've just read the excellent Finding Yourself After Stroke, a compilation of stories from stroke survivors around the world. Kudos to Letisha Living for making this book become reality.
I love this collection of stories, straight from the hearts and minds of 26 stroke survivors from all around the world. Written in their own words, this book shares the lived experiences – positive and negative – of people from all walks of life. Each story reveals just how essential it is to have the support of well-informed and caring family, friends and healthcare professionals all the way from initial diagnosis and treatment, through rehabilitation and – where needed – ongoing care.
The stories demonstrate the power of early intervention, correct diagnosis and effective communication among family, friends, carers and the healthcare system. They elegantly articulate the profound practical and emotional benefits that accrue when survivors are listened to, encouraged, and truly heard by others as they wrestle to come to terms with how their mind and body work, while simultaneously searching for meaning in their up-ended lives.
Ultimately, this book captures the power of the human spirit. While the stroke survivor journey can be challenging – sometimes extremely challenging – with the right support, and an individual’s willingness to explore ways forward, people can find ways to adapt, grow and discover a new sense of purpose and self-worth.
As someone who’s on a similar journey myself, I’m very grateful to everyone who helped bring this book to life. If you’re a stroke survivor, family member, carer, healthcare professional or healthcare administrator I strongly recommend you give this collection the attention it deserves. Sit down and read it end-to-end, or just dip in and read a single story whenever you can: either way, you’ll be wiser and better prepared as help yourself or others.
