We are all familiar with the Welcome to Country and Acknowledgement of Country that is an integral component of meetings/gatherings/events in contemporary Australia.
As an addition to these acknowledgements, it is, I feel it is also appropriate to acknowledge the contribution of stroke survivors, carers and others at the many meetings that they/we attend on a regular basis.
Especially the Stroke Survivors Lived Experience which forms an invaluable part of the manyresearch projects, clinical trials. Their stroke stories are given freely, openly, and often courageously.
This Citation of Gratitude (See Below) which I have been part of the development is now used as a means of acknowledging the contributions of attendees at several committees that I serve on. All attendees have welcomed this Citation.
To avoid any possible cultural clashes, this Citation is read aloud at the CONCLUSION of the Agenda, which I feel is an appropriate way to close out a meeting.
Incidentally, this concept was initially raised and implemented by Liz Murphy, CEO of the Stroke Foundation and a similar citation is utilised at Stroke Foundation Meetings.
Respect to Liz- a worthy CEO.
