Yesterday I watched on BBC a program titled Contact where two ladies discussed the issue of sleep problems and how it effects productivity. They said that in UK due to sleeping difficulties of employees the productivity loss is about GBP 40 Billion annually while in USA it is about US$ 400 Billion per year. But as I heard, they could not give as to what is the root cause.
The root cause to lack of good sleep is the way we illustrate our consciousness. The consciousness and Name & form are like two bundles of bamboo leaning against each other. If we illustrate our consciousness with bad name & form, we have troubled minds. Often people at work are prone to illustrate the consciousness negatively with form-perceptions which are negative and cause depression. Such people are prone to constantly keeping harping at the past and make the names & forms resurface in the consciousness. So people with such mindsets cannot get a good nights sleep. Also one lady said that a human being needs 8 to 9 hours of sleep a day and i strongly disagree with that. You can do with even 4 to 5 hours of sleep per day provided your consciousness is not too badly illustrated. The path to purification of such consciousness is through Mindfulness Meditation and Vipassana (insight). I now do not need more than 4 to 5 hours of sleep and still work 5 days a week as a consultant for an airline operation in Commercial. Mindfulness Meditation enable you to build concentration. That powers your mind to be free and easy. Insight meditation enable you to cleanse the consciousness so that you feel easy and free and yet do all you should do for your family, company, region or country etc. Buddha the Enlightened One slept only one and half hours per day. Yet he would walk with disciples 20 30 miles a day from village to village to guide and teach people on the sublime path to freedom. So do not feel bad about lack of sleep but work on mindfulness building with meditation and you will be free and easy and will be more productive at office or home than ever before. Then your country too will benefit and the per capita GDP will also grow. That will be a win-win situation. So the way to a good night's sleep is meditation, Mindfulness & Vipassana.
