I guess it all started at Royal Ryde rehab when one of the physio's explored the option of a recumbent bike. I guess they all knew me as that crazy mountain biker, who, even though approaching a midlife crisis, jumping off boulders and dodging trees at a million miles an hour, probably wasn't age appropriate. This option extended to a two hour session at the local learner driver facility, riding a variety of recumbent bikes, supplied by Fresh Track's, around a 1Km circuit. This proved to be a fantastic cardio and cognitive exercise, pushing through steep hills and avoiding all manner of meandering wildlife.
This experience really contributed to my normalising goals. I met some really wonderful people and was exposed to people with varying degrees of brain injuries. I was asked to participate and provide feedback on a new machine being developed by Fresh Track's, a static recumbent bicycle with an interactive display which provided a number of challenging exercises. These exercises ranged from collecting and remembering groceries to destroying intergalactic enemies. Goals need to be met before you reach the next level, the clock doesn't stop ticking and you pedal as hard as you set the resistance...... without the need for body armour, full face helmet and snake bite kit. I'm going to have to say, definitely well worth looking at for recovery after a stroke. So watch this space.
