No night vision

Hi everyone. It has been 7 months now since my brain stem stroke. My vision was affected after the terrible vertigo. It took almost 5 months to return to normal. I walk almost normal now during the day, but i have found as soon as i try to walk in little or no light....it is like i am extremely drunk. Anyone else have this problem. I think i had a small stroke a few months after my first ...however the hospital stay revealed nothing. The hearing in my right ear went from perfect to complete deafness...i am wondering if this is the reason my balance is so bad in the dark.

Hi Russ,

Thanks for your blog post. In low light environments, we rely on our balance and sensory systems to keep our balance. This can be challenging when getting up at night or walking in poorly lit areas. Have you had your hearing and balance tested? A neurological physiotherapist can assess your balance to identify strategies to help. In the meantime, you may like to try night-lights and hall/room lighting if you get up in the night.

It’d be interesting to see if others have other strategies. I’ll chat to my physiotherapy and occupational therapy colleagues to see if they have anything else to add.

Hello Russ l am anxious about moveing around in poor lighting. We leave a bathroom light on for me to prevent falling and breaking something. I have a bedside light that always use ,plus a torch under my pillow. Even though my balance is good I am not prepared to take unnecessary risks. Jenny

Thanks Lisa. I have returned to Thailand where i teach English. Availability to any services here is slim to none. My hearing was checked after my overnight loss of hearing in my right ear. I have zero hearing now in that ear. I went to my local shop with my torch.....as soon as the torch went flat i felt like i was having an anxiety attack and my walking became terrible. My ear has definately affected my balance. My motorbike riding days seem to be over :(

Hi Jenny. I also have night lights everywhere....before this i had a few episodes of wandering around lost in my bedroom. As soon as my wife hears me move now.....the light goes on...lol...so she doesnt get sat on.
