On Friday 9 September 2022, I had the privilege of addressing \{via ZOOM\} 2nd Year Physio students in the School of Health Sciences, University of Newcastle at the invitation of Professor Coralie English and Dr Jodie Marquez, Senior Lecturer in Physiotherapy.
The subject of my address was My Stroke, My Rehab Journey and my Insights and Learnings which I have accrued since that my Left Lacunar Stroke in 2016.
The reception and subsequent response from the students were simply fantastic with many excellent questions.
As a former Valley Boy [I grew up in Singleton, only 50 miles up the road from Newcastle] it was very heartening to be able to return to Newcastle to participate in such a task.
I spent many a summer weekend surfing at the local beaches during my youth in the mid to late 60s.
During my presentation I also took the opportunity to give a shout out to the team behind the IREBOUND Project.
This is a web-based project which was conceived and created in Newcastle by a team of amazing collaborators [researchers, clinicians and importantly a great giving group of Stroke Survivors] under the leadership of Professor Coralie English.
IREBOUND has been described [and rightly so] as a world first and is revolutionary and evolutionary and I was proud to have played a small part in its genesis.
Stroke Survivors were the principal contributors of material.
I have included several my slides in this blog which contain key messages that I delivered during my presentation.
I would like to thank Dr. Dawn Simpson, Lecturer and Physiotherapist, School of Health Sciences, University of Newcastle who hosted me and facilitated the day.
This activity is part of my “Giving Back “strategy and I will never decline an invitation to discuss my ‘Lived Experience’
