Note: This treatment is experimental treatment and is not available in Australia. We look forward to seeing the outcome of research. This blog is not an endorsement of the treatment
Hi All,
Community member Barb has introduced us to young survivor Ellie Cammack, who is currently documenting her treatment using deep brain stimulation for spasticity. DBS is an experimental treatment being researched at the Mayo Clinic in the USA.
DBS involves implanting electrodes within certain areas of your brain. These electrodes produce electrical impulses that regulate abnormal impulses. Or, the electrical impulses can affect certain cells and chemicals within the brain.
The amount of stimulation in deep brain stimulation is controlled by a pacemaker-like device placed under the skin in your upper chest. A wire that travels under your skin connects this device to the electrodes in your brain.
Please keep in mind, the treatment is still being trailed, however if you are interested following Ellie’s treatment, you can via her blog.
