There comes a point in every stroke survivor’s life when the private work of rehabilitation intersects with the wider world of science and medicine.
For me, that moment arrived in 2016 when I was invited to participate in a clinical trial.
I paused. I questioned. I reflected.
And then I realised something profound: my lived experience is not just personal — it is clinically powerful.
Stroke survivors carry a form of knowledge that cannot be taught, simulated, or approximated.
It is earned through: long nights of pain; early mornings of determination, and the slow rebuilding of identity.
Clinicians can measure blood flow and map neural pathways, but they cannot know what it feels like to wake at 3am with a leg cramp.
My Blog - When Lived Experience Becomes Clinical Power: Why I Said Yes to a Trial....A Moment That Changed my Rehabilitation – expands on my thoughts and I hope it motivates you to say YES to [participating in a clinical trial.
