In the last few weeks I've been getting involved in advocating for community awareness of young stroke. I decided to host some kind of fundraiser during Stroke Week 2018. After putting it out on the Young Stroke Facebook page and my own Facebook pages, I got so many great ideas but in the end I decided a trivia night was a manageable first-time fundraiser.
I contacted the Stroke Foundation, picked a date, booked a hall, gathered a few volunteers to start organising things and we're well on the way to making it a great event.
In chatting with a few friends, we picked a theme: "Under the Stars". I'm trying to make this a really uplifting and inspiring night, that also raises awareness and money for the Stroke Foundation.
I know this may seem a bit cheesy, but I've always loved the speech that the president in the film 'Independence Day' makes. I think it can really apply to us as well. I've always been a person with a keen sense of social justice and doing whatever I can to make things better for others. I'm more a behind the scenes person, hating the spotlight, but you can't be meek and mild for every occasion. So here goes:
"We will not go quietly into the night! We will not vanish without a fight! We’re going to live on! We’re going to survive! Today we celebrate our independence day!”
This is how I usually am:
But not today. I'm putting myself out there and I hope it makes a difference to some people.
I'll keep blogging on this as new developments occur.
Oh, and if anyone wants to lend a hand... I'd be happy to have you!
And if you want to come to the trivia night I'll post another blog as soon as I have details!
