This week we are supporting invisible/Hidden disabilities.
Sometimes post stroke we are faced with many challenges.
We are seen often as drunk, drug addict and mentally unstable.
Is this fair??
No??
Did I choose my stroke??
No!
I am a proud 57-year-old women.
Life is a journey and yes, I have journeyed, I have been challenged, and I have had many people stare, judge and voiced that I did not need the resources available for disabilities.
Brain injury is today's hidden disability.
Not seen, not heard and differently not noted. Globally 1 in 6 live with a disability.
If you look at me, you see a woman of 57 years, it's not until I start to walk that you see the balance issues or until I become overwhelmed that I lose my words, or the fatigue that one gets from concentration or barriers etc.
There are many people that don't get me or my injury, but I have learnt to get pass that.
This blog isn't about me; it's about the hidden disability. Please learn to not judge, please look out for these people that have a sunflower lanyard, we are the people that need extra time, extra support, and patience.
Today, I have risen, am I ready to fly solo? NO not yet! But I am ready to believe and trust.
So, if you walk pass someone that has a sunflower lanyard, I wear my proudly, (these lanyards have enabled me to be able to be more independent, can collect one at airports and train stations--NSW) please don't judge us, please support our hidden disabilities.
Cheers for now Donna
