Often people who try mindfulness meditation say that due to the wondering mind it is very difficult. But the reality is that the mind is always wondering from one to the other just like a monkey flying from treetop to treetop. But calming the irritable wondering mind is the path to mindful living and away from the mental stress and agony. The difficulty is in the initial stages, and one should not try to fight thoughts that steam in but observe and not give any value. The beauty of thoughts is that if you do not give any value, they cease then and there. Once you overcome the initial part (may take for some even months) then thereafter the rest is easy. Let us use a simile here. Imagine an aircraft taking off and after taxing at high speed will lift up. But for that lift and to take the pane away from gravitational pull you have to burn more than 30 to 40% of fuel in the tanks. But once it reaches the cruising level it burns very less fuel and easy. In the same way meditation, it is the first few sittings that are difficult. Once you have understood the nature of mind and not fight it, it will begin to calm and you can retain one-pointed concentration on the object you have chosen for the meditation. If it is the breath then you can concentrate on its movement and the mind will soon become tranquil. do keep trying.
