The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) continues to roll out across Australia, and we are getting lots of questions on StrokeLine about it. Here are some tips on how to you can get the most out of your NDIS plan.
- Research and come prepared to your planning meeting
Your participation in the planning meeting is integral to making the most out of the scheme. Having a good understanding of how the NDIS works will empower you to be your best advocate. Visit the NDIS website, read up on the support categories, watch webinars and attend NDIS information events in your local area.
- Think about your life-long goals and aspirations
Write down your life goals whether they are big or small. The NDIS values social inclusion of people with disabilities, so don’t be afraid to include all the activities that make life meaningful to you. Are there activities you would like to participate in? Would you like to join a support group, play a sport or attend an art group. Would you like to sign up for a course, volunteer or work? What supports do you need to make your goals possible?
- Learn the NDIS language
Understand the difference between Core, Capital and Capacity supports. Core supports enable you to complete activities of daily living and work towards your goals . Examples of core supports include personal care assistance, transport and access to translating services. Capital supports include home modifications and assistive technology (such as communication aids and wheelchairs). Capacity supports enable you to build up your independence and skills. Capacity supports range from access to therapy, help to find employment or coordinating your services. NDIS planners need to rationalise the resources requested in your plan. To help support your case, make the link between your life-long goals and explain how the above support categories will help you to achieve your goals. Read and use the NDIS Price Guide to justify the supports you ask for.
- Ask for help
Would you like family, a carer or a trusted friend to attend your planning meetings? Enlist the help of your health professionals or local disability advocacy support agencies who can provide information and advice on navigating the NDIS pathway. https://www.dss.gov.au/our-responsibilities/disability-and-carers/program-services/for-people-with-disability/national-disability-advocacy-program-ndap
