With a title like that they sound special, and they are.
I had a medium strength stroke and my therapy was designed to suit that. I have read general articles saying “Join an exercise club, join a gym” which may or may not help all S.A.P.s.
The brain sends electrical signals to control outward movements of the body, legs and upper limbs in our case. A stroke destroys brain cells and electrical signals cease and we become S.A.P.s of various intensity.
Now, neurological electrical signals work both ways. If a therapist moves a restricted leg, an electrical signal is sent to the brain. But that part of the brain is dead or damaged and nothing happens. But the physio persists and another part of the brain accepts the signal and takes control of the leg movements. That’s a layperson’s explanation of the brains neuroplasticity.
Our neuro physios have four or five year university degrees. Who better to help S.A.P.s?
