On New Year's Eve 2016 I had a clot in my left side brain causing loss of speech and full right side paralysis. Luck was on my side that afternoon. My husband was home (usually out jogging), heard me fall and called the ambulance immediately. I live 15 minutes away from a major stroke specialist hospital, so within the hour I was in theatre receiving thrombolytics and a clot retrieval procedure. Within 4 hours I was in a ward, talking clearly (albeit slowly) waving my arm and moving my leg at anyone who would look.
My recovery has amazed everyone including some of the neurologists/cardiologist as well as family and friends. I only had some issues with fine motor skills which are just about resolved.
I will be returning to work next week (with bosses support) and my daughter gave me a new mug which reads "Nice try STROKE but I'm still here" I love it. It sums up exactly how I feel - positive about my future.
