This morning, for the tenth consecutive year, I had the pleasure of speaking with Third‑Year Physiotherapy students at the Australian Catholic University, Ballarat, and North Sydney Campuses, via ZOOM.
This opportunity was at the gracious invitation of Associate Professor Simone Dorsch and Associate Professor Belinda Bilney.
My presentation covered my stroke story—life before and after the stroke—my rehabilitation journey, and the insights and lessons I have learned over the past decade.
Each attendee received a copy of my memoir, A Life Re‑Written, together with a selection of my recent blogs.
As in previous years, I was impressed by the students’ interest, warmth, and the breadth and depth of their questions. Topics ranged from survivor/clinician relationships, the role of family in the rehabilitation process, and interaction between treating clinicians and the families of stroke survivors.
As always, I came away confident that the future of stroke physiotherapy is in excellent hands. I regard this opportunity as extremely valuable to my own rehabilitation and to my giving‑back strategy.
Since 2016, I have spoken with almost 3,000 students and consider this activity a core part of MY Giving Back Strategy, and I encourage anyone who has the chance to meet with future clinicians to seize it and share their Lived Experience.
I thank my hosts, Associate Professor Simone Dorsch and Associate Professor Belinda Bilney, for the invitation and allowing me the privilege of undertaking this activity.
