Last week I had the pleasure to meet with nine other stroke survivors from the UK,Six Reasons why Stroke Survivors should share their Lived Experience with researchers. and the USA on a webinar to discuss the topic “Why stroke survivors should, if the opportunity arose, share their Lived Experience with Stroke researchers”.
Thrill Seekers and Fellow Time Travellers, it turned out to be a great opportunity for me to hear from other survivors from distant lands on this important subject.
What was amazing was the unison of ideas that came up in our discussions during the webinar, so much so we are meeting again in January 2025 to discuss another subject \{yet to be chosen\}.
In summary, the six reasons that we agreed on were familiar to all of us, which in itself reinforces the validity and relevance of our attitudes.
In no particular order, here are six reasons why sharing Lived Experience is so important.
Enhanced Understanding.
Stroke Survivors can provide firsthand accounts of their experiences, challenges, and successes, offering researchers a deeper and more nuanced understanding of stroke rehabilitation.
Patient-Centered Strategies.
Stroke Survivors’ insights help ensure that research and healthcare practices are aligned with the actual needs and concerns of stroke survivors, leading to more effective and compassionate care.
Improving Treatment Strategies:
Stroke Survivors’ feedback on what works, and what can’t/and will guide the development of more effective rehabilitation and treatment strategies.
Advocacy and Awareness:
Sharing personal stories can raise awareness about the impacts of stroke and the importance of research, potentially driving more support and funding for stroke research initiatives.
Empowerment:
Contributing to research allows stroke survivors to take an active role in the medical community, turning their experiences into powerful tools for change and improvement.
Innovation:
Lived experiences can inspire innovative approaches and solutions that researchers might not consider without direct stroke survivor input.
By sharing their experiences, stroke survivors play a crucial role in advancing medical knowledge and improving outcomes for future patients.
My Key Message to Stroke Survivors.
Your Lived Experience is important to the future of Stroke Research. Be part of the future.
