As Diana mentioned, fatigue is a very common experience for stroke survivors. For some people their fatigue improves over time while for others it remains consistent. As in your situation, fatigue often has a ripple effect over other areas of stroke recovery such as concentration as well as physical rehabilitation and pain. This is why multiple strategies are usually used to approach fatigue management.

The resources that Diana sent have some really good suggestions for ways to manage fatigue. We would also suggest starting to think about possible triggers and perhaps even keeping a diary of these – overtime you may find patterns e.g. you may feel more fatigued at the end of the day or after your rehab exercises. This would then help you plan your day and plan for periods of rests at around your trigger times. It’s also worth noting that sometimes you may feel fatigued without a known trigger – the key is to listen to your body and take breaks when you feel you need. Eating a healthy diet, drinking plenty of water and getting exercise as appropriate is also important when trying to manage fatigue. It is also a good idea to talk to your GP to check if there are any other contributing factors.

Are you currently seeing a rehabilitation team such a physiotherapist and/or occupational therapist? If so, keep them informed about your fatigue levels so they can tailor your rehab program accordingly and also provide tailored strategies for you.
