Fear of Another Stroke

It’s great that you are reaching out.

I am sure it’s normal after what you have been through to be apprehensive about any recommendations to cease medication that has been prescribed,  prior to any pending surgery.

It’s imperative to speak to the specialist who prescribed the medication regime for you in the first place, or if this is not feasible , a current specialist who is overseeing this for you.

This may be a Cardiologist or Neurologist

They should be able to give you sound advice about stopping any medications based on your individual needs and circumstances and may be able to liaise with your surgeon about this.

When reading any research online,  it’s most important to make sure any decisions are the right individual fit for you and that they are based on good , direct sound advice.

Thanks for the sound advice Alicia. I don’t have a specialist overseeing me , only my GP

However I will try to contact a neurologist at the large public in Perth were I was treated for my stroke.

Hello Ian, it’s good to voice these things, but don’t get hung up on it. I’ve had a number of ops, no big deal, just waking up at the end. Any doctor who has had a few years experience will gladly smooth your feathers, they have had thousands of us pass before them. They will certainly assist you, you don’t need a brain scientist, there are many much more critical factors here in play, many. Simply trust your doctor and you will be in  a better position than nick picking minor things. Our morale, how we feel, how we view major procedures, are much more than aspirin being high. Head up and be thankful for whatever is our lot aye ! Dave.  

Thanks for your encouragement Dave.  It is now a week since my operation and all went fine and I was glad to get back onto clopodigrel the day after my operation for an inguinal hernia in my groin. The surgeon, assistant surgeon and anaesthetist were very nice.

I had a cold at the time of the operation and it was a bit stressful because I had to drive about 10 kilometres to get a covid and respiratory virus test 24 hours before the planned operation. Fortunately the results came back negative about 12 hours and thus the operation did not have to be cancelled but it was stressful until I got the results.

Because I had a cold I got a private room for 24 hours in a private room in a private hospital that was nice and good food. Antibiotics worked wonderfully.

Now waiting for my out of pocket costs from the hospital and private health fund. 

Wondering if the hernia was caused by weakness in that area caused by a tube being passed via my femoral artery into my brain for an angiogram when I had a stroke 4 years ago.

First the doctors know what they are doing and you won't die , your worrying about nothing , same as everyone else , if the worst happens it is because it is meant to happen , with or without the operation , my rules are simple , before you are born you where nothing , when you die you are returning to nothing , just be thankful you were given a life ,  Death can happen anytime and you can't do a thing about it , so why worry . Think about it !

Hi Gary, I thought your perspective of life was good. But for me I still worried.

I was anaesthetised for a cataract surgery about 5 years ago and woke up during the surgery with a migraine, a migraine similar to when I had a stroke 4 years ago.

The Gp said I may have had a stroke but I didn’t  have a MRI  but maybe the GP was right.

So I was a bit worried about another stroke because of the anaesthetic and ceasing clopidogrel, one of my blood thinners.

But fortunately I was fine.
