I am writing this blog today after again, for what seems the millionth time, trying to explain to others that communication after a stroke is not straightforward. There are a lot of help-lines available for in the moment talking help. There's alot of advertisements about how "talking to a professional" can help and I continually want to reframe this to "communicate" rather than talking. Because the very demand that someone's needs to "talk" puts pressure on my frontal lobes in terms of it being very triggering in how I was very unable to talk and explain my needs after my stroke.
The first time I actually had some counselling after my stroke, was disastrous. I felt very resistant to any kind of experience where I was expected to talk and have my attempts be misinterepreted and the whole - saying no when I meant yes and yes when I meant no, was a very very aconfronting and confusing experience.
If this change was made more broadly from "talk" to "communicate" it might make a difference in how considerations are made for those who for not only stroke reasons find talking difficult.
Just a thought thats been on my mind for some months now.
