So today I took the plunge and went canvassing local businesses for support for my fundraiser. I headed out early, had my wing-man (hubby) and pre-prepared letters in envelopes ready to hand to businesses. I had a speech worked out in my head, I was dressed well and was ready and raring to go.
I walked into the first business (a cafe), asked for the manager... and then my stutter... and my tongue got twisted... and my words got muddled... and I had to start over. By the second business I was speaking better. Most places were really lovely and either offered support on the spot, or said they usually did but the manager wasn't in. Only two flat out refusals, but undaunted we continued. By the time we had walked most of the town, I was confident enough not to worry about my speech, although it did trip me up a few times. (Keep breathing, that's the key!)
More canvassing later in the week, going further afield. Any suggestions for who else to ask? We've got cafes, small local businesses, a few larger retailers and entertainment venues.
In the meantime hubby and I have been having fun looking up and writing trivia questions, deciding on a theme, organising my crew of volunteers (still room for more of those!!), making up games for in between.
I've also set up a everydayhero page where people can make donations, and importantly, they can pay for their tickets online! I get an email as soon as someone donates so I know I can issue them with their tickets (I donated to my page to try it out!).
I've hired a venue (at a reduced rate because it's a charity event) and Mum, Dad and I went and had a look at it last week. Bless my Dad, "he's an ideas man", with lots of good advice. Only trouble I'm having is the ideas are all in my head, and I'm a terrible artist at the best of times so getting these ideas onto paper for others is proving a challenge!
Houston - we are go for launch!
