At the recent Stroke 2023 Conference in Melbourne, the Stroke Foundation organised a day for people with lived experience of stroke. The day included workshops on how to get involved in research and co-design.
It was an inspiring event for those who attended in person and online. Here are videos of the morning workshops if you were unable to attend, or if you want to relive the experience.
Workshop one
The speakers were Adrian O’Malley, survivor of stroke and Karly Zacharia, University of Newcastle researcher.
They set the scene for the day and shared:
- their research journeys
- how stroke research works
- different ways to get involved
- how to advocate for yourself and others.
Workshop two
The second workshop featured survivors of stroke and researchers who have worked together. They talked about how to make the most of co-design in research.
The speakers were:
- Saran Chamberlain and Elizabeth Lynch. They talked about being part of a team working in stroke research and things to consider.
- Brooke Parsons and Julie Bernhardt. They talked about their long collaboration over 18 years of research.
- Vikki Cail and John Pierce. They talked about how people with aphasia can work in research co-design.
We hope this will inspire you to take part in research and co-design. To find out more, see our web page on Getting involved in research.
