On Wednesday 25 March, Professor Bruce Neal, Executive Director, The George Institute forGlobal Health, launched the Centre for Research Excellence on Switching the World’s Salt Supply for Cardiovascular Prevention.
Bruce was joined at the launch by Lisa Murphy, CEO Stroke Foundation, and Ms. AudreyLee,Consumer Representative, TGI.
Supported by $3M from the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC), this new Centre marks the next phase in tackling the world’s leading cause of death, cardiovascular disease.
Potassium-enriched salt is one of the most practical, scalable opportunities to reduce blood pressure and prevent cardiovascular disease worldwide, but delivering this at scale requires collective action.
Now the focus shifts from research to implementation, working with governments, industry, and health systems to enable switching at scale.
Research shows that the evidence is clear: replacing regular salt with potassium-enriched iodised salt can significantly reduce stroke and heart attack risk. At a global scale, switching the world’s salt supply could prevent more than 10 million cardiovascular events every year and save up to 3 million lives.
Interested in learning more about the benefits of Potassium-enriched salt.
Here is an interview with Professor Bruce Neal, a recognised world expert on this subject who joins Philip Clark on ABC Radio’s Nightlife program, where he discusses the link betweenpotassium enriched salt and heart health.
