Hi Cherie
I am so sorry to hear about your struggles with memory loss after your strokes. It must be so frightening and upsetting to lose moments that you treasure, so I thank you for having the strength to share your story.
It must also be really challenging to feel like you have failed your kids as you have forgotten moments in their lives, however I think it’s important to remind yourself of how far you’ve come. Three embolisms are a big deal and to be able to make new memories with your kids now is so special.
Much of the information surrounding memory loss post stroke is regarding short term memories as they are more likely to be an issue than long-term memory loss. Therefore, it may be beneficial to communicate your concerns to your GP and possibly get a referral to a neurologist, if you haven’t already done so, to ensure that there are no new medical issues occurring and for ongoing stroke prevention.
You might also like to talk with your GP about a referral to a memory clinic. We can always help you to find one close to you.
If you do not already have one, an Occupational Therapist may also be able to help by working with you to develop strategies to live with your memory changes.
If you haven’t already been reminded, you are doing great, even with just reaching out for community support. We encourage you to continue to share your story.
Do reach out to us at StrokeLine if you need further support at 1800 787 653 or strokeline@strokefoundation.org.au. We are available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm (AEST).
Warm regards,
Karina and Alicia
