Did you know 44% of the Australian adult population (7.3 million) has non-functional literacy?
This means these adults have difficulty reading or understanding or interpreting many day to day written pieces of information. Many of these adults read little in their day to day lives, which often compounds difficulties when they have to or want to read some information. Health literacy, financial literacy and making meaningful life choices are even more difficult when one's functional literacy is not adequate.
Many people have difficulty managing written information following a stroke. It can be due to their pre-stroke literacy, or it can be related to their stroke and its outcomes, fatigue or even about all the new things they have to learn about. Families and carers can also be challenged due to the changing circumstances, new things they have to learn, and their own fatigue and the stresses of their new life.
