Assistive Technology funded by NDIS

Hi Mahila,

A great post, and nice to open up this discussion. Yes,  you are certainly correct in saying that every stroke survivor will have different needs. I don’t have a list of NDIS approved assistive technologies specific to hemiplegia, however I do have a list of general NDIS approved assistive technologies. You can find it in the link to download here with an outline of everything that can be funded. Within this document there are assistive products like electric wheelchairs, scooters, walking frames, communication, vision aids,  etc.

In the process of getting funding, it is important to have a treating OT/ Physio/Speech pathologist and other health professional to help in the decision about what the stroke survivor needs. They can then make sure that these assistive technologies are customized for the individual and they can assist in the process to get funding.

There is also a blog post found here that may be useful. This blog really highlights the benefit of having an OT who can measure millimeter by millimeter, the requirements of a wheelchair to fit the individual’s needs.

I am hoping to write a section introducing NDIS to some of the people who might be new to it. I understand that NDIS is a changing animal so a forum of discussion like this would be perfect for us to keep updated and of course, correct each other if necessary.

We might even forward good ideas to the Minister's office for implementation if it is useful to others. I just want to see if this is useful and that we can use this section for discussion.

Great question Mahila and some wonderful links and advice here including that, not everyone will have the same AT needs after a stroke. Thanks also for the shout out Jude; our mentors use their lived experience of disability, using AT and training to support their mentees to discover low risk AT up to the value of $15,000 that will meet their individual needs then provide the evidence needed to purchase it with your NDIS funds. It's worth mentioning that they also have the support of an OT when making recommendations about an AT solution. 

This forum is wonderful to hear what AT your peers use in their daily lives. Our AT community uses a Facebook Group called AT Chatterbox which you are welcome to join to share and learn more about AT. There was a great post shared by a member recently about a one-handed walker she is using which could be useful for some here. We'll try to pull something together so we can share it with you all.
