Recurrent Stroke - Recovery

Hi there, 

My grandmother (86 y.o) had an ischemic stroke on the left side on her brain a little over a month ago. She was making slow but steady improvements as she lost control of the right side of her body. However, more recently she's been more upset and crying and she had another stroke two days ago on the right side of her brain. The doctor said she is in a stable condition and is responsive to pain but has not gone into details yet as she is in a semi conscious state. Has anyone had any experience or might know of what we could expect in terms of recovery with another stroke especially for elderly as both sides of her body have now been affected.

We are very sorry to hear about your grandmother having had two recent strokes. It must be a very challenging time for you all.

 

At this early stage after her second stroke, you are best to have a conversation with her treating doctors and team around prognosis and expectations for recovery. They are best placed to give advice on this. Stroke is complex and there are many factors to consider around predicting recovery. The size and location of her strokes, her age and previous level of health and fitness will be some of the things the doctors will be taking into consideration. Improvements in her level of consciousness/alertness and ability to follow commands would also be being monitored to help with predicting her prognosis and her suitability to participate in rehabilitation if/when she is medically stable.
