Anaesthesia Post Stroke

Hi, I am 17 weeks post lateral medullary stroke due to a right intracranial arterial dissection. Unfortunately I have to have a third operation very soon to remove a uretral stent (the first two operations were to place stents and I had the stroke two days after the second procedure). I am very apprehensive about this surgery, in particular the anaesthesia. I have seen three different anaesthetists so far and they all give different advice which includes regional spinal block v GA. Can anyone help me think through the options?

Hi Carolyn,

 

I can certainly understand your apprehension about further surgery and the related anaesthetic.

I would suggest speaking more with your neurologist to gain a firm understanding of the cause of your stroke in relation to your previous surgery. For example, what about the surgery or anaesthetic do they think contributed to the stroke?

It may be useful for the anaesthetist and neurologist to consult with each other to discuss the relative risks specific to your situation, so that you can be given a comprehensive picture of the risks vs benefits of each anaesthetic approach.
