Not sure if I have had a stroke?

Hi I am looking for answers here.  I saw my neurologist yesterday as I have for the past 3 months experienced weakness on my right side with Pins and needles in my arms and legs and feet as well as urinary incontinence and chorea in my hands legs and feet. I am having a brain MRI today but don’t hold out much hope it will show much as I have a metal plate in the right side of my head which makes an MRI difficult. The neurologist is looking for signs of a stroke, if the MRI is unclear are there othe4 tests you can have?

Thanks for your question – here’s some information that I hope will help you:

 

Metal implants are a safety concern when it comes to MRI, so the radiologist will very quickly tell you whether it’s safe or not to proceed with an MRI. It can be safe if the implant is made of titanium, which is not magnetic.  

However titanium can still affect the accuracy of an MRI.

 

CT is an alternative option and many stroke survivors will only have a CT to diagnose their stroke.

 

I would suggest discussing your concerns with your neurologist so that you can together explore whether other options are needed.
