Oh, that’s an awful way to spend xmas day! I hope that you are doing ok in your recovery post stroke. I would also like to hear if anyone else has experienced this pre stroke sensation.
From what I understand, people can experience stroke and pre stroke symptoms on both sides. This may occur due to bilateral strokes. There are also some areas of the brain, that if affected, can affect both sides of the body e.g., brain stem. Did you experience any of these types of strokes? Pre stroke, blood clots may also travel through different areas of the brain before lodging in an area, and you may experience symptoms that are temporary perhaps causing those sensations to both sides of your body.
If you would like to chat with one of our friendly health professionals, please don't hesitate to contact us on StrokeLine 1800 787 653 or email strokeline@strokefoundation.org.au. We are available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm AEDST.
Kind regards,
Kath (StrokeLine)
Hi Terri,
I can't imagine having to spend Christmas of all days in hospital with a stroke, especially when presenting 2 times previously with symptoms occurring on both sides.
At was 26 (15 years ago), I presented at hospital experiencing pain in my right arm which worsened to breathing difficulties while in the waiting room. I am not sure of your age although being young myself, the doctors and nurses did not suspect anything as serious as a stroke.
The nurse told me I was probably just hyperventilating and to breath into a paper bag!!!
Not getting any satisfaction from the staff and being young, I just got angry and ignored this for the next 6 months every time my face tingled, I had any breathing problems or aches and pains anywhere in my body.... little did I know that a blood clot in my Brain Stem was building up until the point I had a Brain Stem Stroke and lost all function except the movement of my eyes. A massive amount of willpower, determination and rehabilitation over 7 1/2 months in 3 hospitals got me to the stage where I was able to go home to my mum's.
Each and every day something new has returned getting better over time, everyone is different though and has a different outcome in rehabilitation.
The best advice I can give is you know your body better than anyone else and if you feel something isn't right, don't leave until you are happy all avenues have been explored. You are your best champion and advocating for yourself can be daunting although it does ensure you have done everything in your power to look after yourself.
Happy to answer any questions you may have or just to chat about your recovery. I am sorry that you were turned away each time you made the effort to attend hospital. All the best with your recovery and rehabilitation.
Take Care,
Bec
