Muscle Fatigue

Haven't been here for a while, but looking for answers and I've always found my answers here.

Whilst in isolation we decided to paint our back rooms. I know, crazy right?

Well, when painting the door frames my right shoulder, elbow and wrist started burning. The pain radiating all the way down my arm.

I changed to my left to paint the rest, but my muscles on my right side have severely pulled tight and shortened.

I'm trying to do stretching exercises but it's like my right shoulder and arm has gone all the way back to how it was just after I had my stroke.

Has anyone else experienced a set back like this? If so what did you do?

TIA

PS: Still got more painting to do before we're finished!

Hi Kjets,

I don't know if this is helpful  - but a few years ago when I felt very stiff and like I was needing to stretch I downloaded a free stretching app.  I mentioned to my Dr I was doing the stretches with  a view to moving onto yoga in the future.  Stretching morning and night for three months really made a difference when I did move on to Yoga. And the Yoga I start with was very basic.

There is a PodCast on EnableMe about Yoga which you might be interested in.

Painting at this time sounds like a very productive thing to be doing :-)

Hi,

Thank you for using the EnableMe platform to ask your questions about your right arm. I am sorry to hear about the pain you are in, and the set back you are feeling in your recovery. It certainly sounds quite excruciating.

I would suggest seeing your GP if you haven’t already. They may ask you a few questions such as how have you been after the initial pain? Have you found that the pain is constantly there? Is the burning and radiating still happening? Are your muscles still tight and shortened? Are they weak? Have you found anything to relieve the pain?

They may be able to do initial testing of your right arm, to find out the cause of your pain and manage it accordingly. For example, if your pain was due to a muscle strain whilst painting, they can investigate this. If it is related to nerve related pain, which is what you may have experienced before, they can address this too. Some management options may be medication, physiotherapy, heat therapy, but best to discuss this with a GP first.

You can find a little more information about pain in our EnableMe page on pain and our pain factsheet.

In the meantime, try not to overexert your right arm. Once you see the doctor and follow a management plan, your arm may heal quicker and hopefully won’t set you back too much.

If you would like to discuss anything further, please don’t hesitate to call StrokeLine on 1800 787 653.

Warm regards,

Kath (StrokeLine)

Thank you for the replies Sue and Kath.  I did go to my GP, who made me realise that in this climate I have not been doing my physio as we are in isolation mode.  Did need to get back to stretching Sue and don't need to be going to MSWA gym to do it!  Isn't it funny that I forget to stretch when I have so much free time! Strange times indeed.
